WiFi & Network Troubleshooting

Most WiFi problems are fixable in minutes — some need a closer look

HomeWiFi & Network Troubleshooting

"WiFi not connecting" almost always falls into one of a few categories: a setting that's accidentally off, outdated drivers, a router that needs restarting, or — less often — a failing WiFi adapter inside the laptop itself. Here's how to tell which one you're dealing with.

Quick checks before anything else
  • Is WiFi actually turned on? (Check for a physical switch or Fn key shortcut, and make sure Airplane Mode is off)
  • Does another device connect fine to the same network? If yes, the issue is likely your laptop specifically, not the router
  • Have you restarted both the laptop and the router?
If those don't help, it's often
  • Outdated or corrupted WiFi drivers — need updating or reinstalling
  • Incorrect network settings (IP/DNS configuration)
  • A router-side issue rather than your laptop
When it's likely hardware, not settings: If your laptop won't connect to any WiFi network at all (not just one), other devices connect fine, and driver updates/reinstalls haven't helped, the WiFi adapter itself may have failed — that's where we help directly, remotely for driver/software fixes or in person for hardware diagnosis.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a laptop's WiFi adapter be replaced if it's failed?
Yes, in most laptops this is a repairable/replaceable component.
Does moving my router help with WiFi dead zones?
Sometimes, though a mesh system or additional access point is often more reliable for larger homes.
My phone connects to WiFi fine but my laptop won't — what does that mean?
The problem is very likely with your laptop specifically (drivers, adapter, or settings), not the router or internet connection.
Can this be fixed remotely, or do I need to bring it in?
Software and driver issues can usually be fixed via our Remote Support service. If it turns out to be a failed WiFi adapter, that needs an in-person repair.
Is a failing WiFi adapter expensive to fix?
It depends on the laptop, but it's often a straightforward component replacement — we'll give you a fixed quote after diagnostics.
